Gunman Clive is a fantastic, finely tuned, budget-priced platformer on the 3DS eShop. The gameplay, art and style has been critically praised, although Destructoid noted that its major flaw is its short length.
Super Mario Advance 4: The style is sort of like a sketch, almost in the Squigglevision animation style of Dr. The story now takes Clive around the world to chase after the leader of the bandits from the first game.

The side-scrolling platformer, bearing a unique art style, benefited greatly from the physical feedback of real buttons on the 3DS. Luckily, the game was already damn good and gleefully polished before it hit the system. At its heart, Gunman Clive is a no-nonsense action platformer that is very much inspired by Mega Man. Controlling the titular gunman or one of two extra characters, one of which is unlocked after beating the game onceyou fight other cowboys and a variety of other enemies, including ducks and pelicans.
The setting is standard Western fare at first, but over time, Mega Man tropes such as disappearing blocks somehow make sense. With outrageous boss battles and a Double Dragon Neon-esque story progression, it is a truly bonkers game that is delightfully short. The graphics are wondrous, especially in 3D. The style is sort of like a sketch, almost in the Squigglevision animation style of Dr. Katz or Home Movies. Characters animate wonderfully, and the variety of locales is nice.
The backgrounds are all the same color, though, and it is occasionally unclear where a platform is. The game is also gentle with its respawns; you restart quickly and the levels are short, making the lack of checkpoints tolerable. While the experience might only be an hour long, Gunman Clive packs a lot of greatness into one hour and has enough extra content to keep players hanging around after they beat it once.
The third unlockable character radically changes the way you play the game, and is a fun treat after working your way through the game. While Gunman Clive has three difficulty settings, the only real difference is how much damage you take. It is a nice touch, but the game is fundamentally identical no matter which setting you have it on.
The added difficulties do give you a perfect excuse to romp through the game with another character, though, which is worthwhile. The stellar game design is emboldened by the three different characters you can play as.
